Starting Nursery / Settling In

We understand that settling young children into a nursery environment can be hard on both parents and children, that is why we provide a fully flexible settling in procedure, whereby the parent and child can book sessions which are based around their individual needs. The sessions can be as short or as long as it takes for your child to feel safe and secure in their new surroundings.

We understand that this is not only an anxious time for a child but also for parents too. We always encourage parents to address their needs and we endeavour to meet them.

Key Person

Each child is allocated a professional qualified practitioner who is responsible for your children’s learning and development. The key person helps to build a secure and welcoming relationship with your child.

Each day the key person ensures that they plan activities based on their key child’s interest ensuring the activities are age appropriate and stimulating. The key person will feed back to parents and carers ensuring that parents remain fully up to date with their child’s day at nursery. The key person holds termly parent meetings to feedback on progress.

Parents as Partners

The Nursery Manager operates an open-door policy whereby parents can speak to the Manager anytime they wish to. We encourage parents to play an active role in the learning and development of their child and continuously provide help and support to parents.

The key person system is embedded in our nursery and works well to keep parents informed of their child’s progress and our commitment to their child’s learning and development.

We hold regular stay and play sessions with parents and parent feedback sessions so that our parents are fully informed. We ask parents to provide us with feedback which in turn helps us to grow as a setting.

Parents as Partners

From the time a child joins our nursery we keep a “learning journal” which records significant moments in a child’s learning. Key persons carry out observations and take pictures of children to record in the journals. Parents can look at their child’s journal at any time. It is a wonderful way to capture a child’s journey of learning.


At Melbourne day nursery we are a child led nursery which means that we plan around a child’s interest ensuring that activities are both stimulating and age appropriate so that children learn and grow. 

We follow the curriculum for the Early Years Foundation Stage, as recommended to us by OFSTED. The areas of learning which we cover are as follow:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Please note that each child is an individual and will learn at their own pace. We need to ensure that each child has a secure foundation and scaffolding on which to base their learning.

Transition to School

Starting school is an important milestone for every child and their parents. At Melbourne day nursery we believe that when children leave our nursery to embark on the next chapter in their lives, we must do all we can to support and celebrate this transition. We must ensure that children are well prepared for the next stage in their learning. Within our nursery it is a firm belief that all children need to be able to start school ready to learn, make friends, play and that they are confident to ask for what they need and voice what they think.

Children’s early experiences are paramount for their future success, and these are influenced by many factors including the impact of their early education and care. Parents and Key Persons working together in partnership are important to develop the home learning environment. By working together, we believe that this will help improve your child’s progress and support them in making a better start at school.

At Melbourne day nursery we liaise with the school prior to children joining them and will invite the teachers to visit the children at the nursery. In the time leading up to the children leaving the nursery to start school the Key Persons will plan and provide a variety of activities to promote school readiness for example:

  • Reading books together about starting school
  • Role playing the teacher with the register
  • Wearing school uniform for the day
  • Eating lunch from a lunch box
  • Taking part in a fun sports day

Staff will also discuss with the children how they are feeling, taking an interest in what they say and engaging in conversations, for example asking them what their teacher’s name is. At Melbourne day nursery we want to involve parents in the transition process and we will share ideas with you as to what you can do at home to support your child in being ready to start school, such as walk or drive past the building to help your child to visualise where their school is and have an image of what it looks like. Our staff understand that it is paramount to communicate as much as possible and endeavour to ensure that as parent’s you feel re-assured at all times so that this experience is a seamless transition for both parents and children.
